7 Ways You're Wasting Time in Your Business

We all wish we had more time in the day to get stuff done, whether its in our business or wanting to spend more time outside our business.  Here are 7 ways I see my clients wasting time in their business.

1 – Not documenting your procedures

Yes I know, documentation is not fun or sexy! But its actually one of the best and easiest ways of saving time in your business. Think about all those tasks that you do every now and again. How much time do you sit there trying to remember what to do and how to do it? By documenting your procedures you don’t have to waste valuable brain power, you just follow the instructions and its done. And best of all its done consistently every time you do it.

Documentation doesn’t have to be onerous. The easiest way I find is to do a quick screen record of yourself doing the task that you can watch back to quickly to jog your memory.

2 – Not using systems to automate processes

Running a business doesn’t have to be all about endless hours of admin. Implementing systems to automate processes in your business is one of the easiest ways to give you time back in your business so you can concentrate on doing the stuff you love.  Read more here about how systems create freedom

3 – Not delegating tasks outside your zone of genius

I know that delegating is one of the scariest steps people can take in their business. But if you really want to maximise the time and energy you put into your business you have to let go of doing everything. The tasks you should be focusing on in your business are the ones that will allow you to grow and expand your business and your offerings, and add value for your customers.

4 – Not having a file system

A good filing system will save you time because you can find what you’re looking for quickly and easily. So set up a system that works for you and your business, and use it consistently. No more having to search through different file drives and folders trying to find that document you wrote 6 months ago. Consistent naming conventions make life easier too. Again they don’t have to be too onerous but make it obvious what the file is about, the date it was updated.

5 – Not focusing on one thing

I’m totally guilty of this one! I know what its like when you get that bolt of inspiration and all of a sudden you have a thousand awesome ideas you want to implement NOW! But if you’re trying to do everything all at once, all you generally end up with is a bunch of stuff you started but never finished. So focus on 1 or 2 things at a time, get them done and then move onto the next.

6 – Not focusing on the tasks that take you towards achieving your goals

Do you ever take a step back and look at your to do list and consider which of those activities are actually taking you a step towards achieving your goals? Of course there are things in business we just have to do (but perhaps consider automating or delegating these). But if the stuff you’re working on isn’t aligned to you goals, then its slowing your progress towards achieving them. So start prioritising your to do list by activities that will make money, and help you achieve your goals.

7 – Not prioritising your health and well being

For many of us we are our business. Without us there is no business. So you need to make sure you are looking after yourself. Are you getting adequate good quality sleep? Are you getting enough down time away from your business? Are you eating well and exercising? I know that when I am not taking care of myself my productivity and quality of work definitely suffers. Your health is one of your most important assets, so please look after yourself before its too late.
